Grennan’s book, Little Princes: “One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost
Children of Nepal” is a real life story
written by the author in what children in Nepal underwent during that period. The
writer reflects on the kind of mistreatment the children were put through by
the rebels in the country. Through the book, one is able to note that different
people in different parts of the world are faced with lots of challenges. The
writer in fact admits that even in planning his exploration of the world, he
was totally naive of any such occurrences such as child abduction and child
trafficking which were rampant in Nepal. Grennan signed up to a volunteer work
for two months at an orphanage based in Nepal, a country under civil war which
had lasted eight years. During his work while at the Little Princes, his love
for the children grew enormously as he would interact more with the children.
This also changed his own life as he was able to know more of the challenges
facing the society. The book, therefore, enables any learner or reader who uses
it to know the importance of interacting with the different groups of people in
the society. The students are also encouraged to appreciate the need for
involving in voluntary work in the country and outside the country. Grennan
decided to follow a path different from the rest of his peers who focused on
settling down in life by offering volunteer opportunities that enabled him to
travel to Nepal where his life changed for the better. He also helped children
and vulnerable communities in Nepal .
The
book also offers an opportunity for different learners across the world to know
more about child abduction and child trafficking across the world. It helps in
providing a true reflection of the level of poverty and ignorance in the
society today. The book also provides information on the increase in child
labor across the world as it is in the case of Nepal. Therefore, learners are
able to explore the real causes of child labor across the world and what can be
done to stop child trafficking menace across the world. Most rebels in Nepal
abducted children from villages, used them as workers and also trained some as
their own soldiers. Meanwhile, child trafficker called Golkka convinced several
families that he would rescue their children by giving them homes, proving
education and also protecting “them from the Maoist rebels” . This was not to
be as the children were later sold as slaves, while others ended in streets.
Through
the voluntary work, Grenna got a lot of exposure and by the time he left the
voluntary work, he saw the need to “start a non-profit organization that would
help address the plight of different children in different children homes” .
Through this organization, he was able to get funds from different
organizations which enabled him to travel back to Nepal and assist the
children. In summary, the book explains the importance of being adventurous in
life as through this, one is able to interact with different groups of people
in the society and also helps address the challenges facing the less fortunate
in the society. Students would, therefore, be aware of such challenges, and
thus work towards offering solutions to the problems such as child trafficking.
